Sphera Energy is grateful for having been invited the past 19th of October by the Energyear Italia event organizers to take part in a panel on the development of the Energy Storage sector in Italy with fellow experts from Deloitte, Statkraft, Jones Laing Lasalle, Sungrow and Ingeteam.
A few key takeaways from our perspective:
- Whilst the industry still needs Terna auction rules and new capacity market round announcements to have greater certainty on the investment case, development activity is already going full throttle.
- There are a huge amount of STMG requests for storage (54 GW just for standalone projects), however the level of knowledge and development quality in BESS is still limited vs other more advanced markets... a lot of this volume will not make it to implementation. Quality projects/pipelines will.
- The Italian market will be quite unique in the european storage panorama with 2 distinct revenues models, a strongly regulated one represented by Terna's auctions, and a hybrid one with capacity market + arbitrage / balancing / ancillary services. The expected returns for long term investors in these 2 asset classes will also likely be different.
- Great progress on the OEM front with lots of innovation and staggering increases in density... good for LCOS.
